Non-lucrative residence: the consulate first, Girona second

Non-EU nationals who will live here without working, on a pension, savings or income from abroad, take the residencia no lucrativa: a consulate visa before the move, then fingerprints for the TIE in Girona.

Step one, at the consulate

You apply for the visa where you live today. Among other things, the consulate asks for proof of sufficient and steady means, private health insurance valid in Spain, evidence of a clean criminal record and a doctor’s certificate. Amounts and details are set by the rules and by each consulate; we quote no figures and check yours against the current list.

If you would rather hand the whole move to one firm, AnchorLess organises moves to Spain, from the visa to settling in.

Step two, in the province

Once you have arrived with the visa, register on the padró at your address and book the fingerprint appointment for the TIE, with Girona as the province. policia.es lists the issue of the TIE at C/ Santa Eugènia 145 and at several units of the province, and also names non-lucrative residence, “residencias no lucrativas”, among the procedures at C/ Cristobal Grober 12. The confirmation gives the address for your trámite.

What it does not allow

This residence does not let you work in Spain, neither as an employee nor as a self-employed worker. If you intend to keep working remotely for clients or an employer abroad, raise it with an adviser before applying: another route may suit you better.

Renewing it

The first authorisation runs for a limited period and is renewed while the conditions are still met. The Delegación del Gobierno’s page lists residence authorisations at its Oficina de Extranjería on Gran Via de Jaume I 17 (972 069 140), while policia.es lists non-lucrative residence at C/ Cristobal Grober 12. Check the trámite with us or on the booking system before you file, and expect a new fingerprint appointment for the new card.

In Girona

Many people on this route settle away from the city, in the villages of the Empordà, the Garrotxa or near the coast, yet the card is still a police procedure booked for the province of Girona. policia.es lists TIE issue at C/ Santa Eugènia 145 and in towns such as Figueres or Lloret de Mar, and non-lucrative residence at C/ Cristobal Grober 12; your confirmation decides.

Questions

Can I apply for this visa from Girona while visiting?

As a rule, no. The visa is applied for abroad, at the consulate that serves your home country, before you move.

Would buying a house help?

No residence comes with a home: Spain closed its golden visa in 2025. A property can still show where you will live.

Can my spouse come with me?

Yes, close family can apply alongside you, each with an application of their own, as the consulate explains.

Is this the route for British people retiring here?

For those who settle now, it is one of the main ones. Those resident before 2021 hold an Agreement TIE instead.
