Leaving Spain while your card is pending: the autorización de regreso
A non-EU resident who travels while a TIE is being renewed, or before a first card is ready, needs the autorización de regreso to re-enter Spain. In Girona, policia.es lists this police permit at C/ Cristobal Grober 12, and at no other unit of the province.
When you need it
Typically when your TIE has expired and its renewal is in progress, or when a first card has been applied for but not issued and your visa no longer covers travel. If a family emergency calls you abroad, ask about it before you book any flight.
Where Girona lists it
policia.es names return authorisations, “autorizaciones de regreso”, among the procedures at C/ Cristobal Grober 12 (972 225 557), and at no other unit of the province. The Delegación del Gobierno’s page says they are dealt with by the police, not at its Oficina de Extranjería on Gran Via de Jaume I. Book it on the booking pages, Girona as the province, and follow the confirmation.
What to take
- The application for the authorisation, signed
- Your passport, and a photocopy
- The expired TIE, or the resguardo of your card application
- Proof that the renewal is in progress, if that is your case
- The Modelo 790 código 012, paid
Its limits
The authorisation covers your return to Spain within the period it states. It does not replace a visa that another country may require of you, and it is not granted in every situation: if your renewal has been refused or an appeal is pending, take advice before you travel.
In Girona
For residents of Girona or the coast whose card is in renewal, the return authorisation is one of the procedures policia.es lists at C/ Cristobal Grober 12, beside the NIE on its own and the students’ procedures. The State office on Gran Via de Jaume I does not deal with it.
Questions
My card expired and the renewal is pending. Can I fly to see family?
With an autorización de regreso, yes. Without one, you risk not being let back in. Book it before you buy the ticket.
Can the Oficina de Extranjería on Jaume I issue it?
No: the Delegación’s own page sends return authorisations to the police. In Girona, policia.es lists them at C/ Cristobal Grober 12.
Is a fee due?
Yes, paid on the Modelo 790 código 012 under its own heading. We quote no amount; the form shows the current one.
