Students in Girona: the paper your passport and your course call for
Your passport decides, then the length of the course. Europeans staying longer than three months apply for the green certificate at C/ Rajolers 7; everyone else comes on a student visa and, for more than six months, gives fingerprints for a TIE.
European students
No visa is involved. For a course of more than three months you register as a resident like any European, on form EX-18, showing your enrolment and your health cover, and declaring in writing that your resources are sufficient. policia.es lists the European procedures at C/ Rajolers 7.
From outside the EU
For a course longer than three months, the student visa comes first, requested before departure from the Spanish consulate responsible for where you live; the NIE is normally assigned with it. Once in Girona, if the stay runs beyond six months, you book the toma de huellas for a student TIE.
Students on the Girona list
In the brigade’s entry for C/ Cristobal Grober 12, policia.es names students, “estudiantes”, among the procedures, while the issue of the TIE is listed at C/ Santa Eugènia 145. Pick the trámite that matches your step, and the booking system offers the office that goes with it.
Staying for another year
A student stay is extended rather than started over: the extension is requested before the current authorisation expires, with proof that you are still enrolled and still have the means and the health cover. Authorisations are a matter for the immigration authorities, and policia.es also lists students at C/ Cristobal Grober 12, so check the trámite, or ask us, before you file.
A job alongside the course
Non-EU students may work while they study, within limits the rules set and as long as the work fits around the course. Before you sign a contract, send us a few lines: the rules change, and older advice found online may no longer apply.
In Girona
Students who live in Girona, Salt or Sarrià de Ter and attend classes in the city meet the steps spread across the brigade’s addresses: policia.es lists students at C/ Cristobal Grober 12, EU registration at C/ Rajolers 7 and the issue of the TIE at C/ Santa Eugènia 145. The trámite you choose sends you to the right one.
Questions
An Erasmus semester from Italy: do I register?
If you stay beyond three months, yes, on the EX-18. For a shorter stay you need nothing, unless something you do asks for a NIE.
Does the university give me my NIE?
No. The NIE comes from the Policía Nacional. A university’s international office can explain the steps, but the request, the fingerprints and the card are police procedures.
My visa covers less than six months. Do I need a TIE?
As a rule, no: the visa covers the stay. The card is for longer stays.
Should a student register on the padró?
If you live in Girona, yes. The padró is for everyone who lives in the town, students included. Erasmus and university grants are among the uses for which the Ajuntament says a formal padró certificat is needed.
